BENEFITING: BROOKLYN FREE SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Brooklyn Free School is a groundbreaking option in education where a community of parents, students and educators believe that freedom and democracy are not just textbook concepts, but a way of living and learning. Brooklyn Free School (BFS) believes that all students must be free to develop in an environment where they are empowered to make decisions affecting their lives and community.
BFS places the highest emphasis on the personal development of each student and seeks to minimize, or if possible eliminate completely, undue influence, pressure and stress that accrue from expectations on students to acquire the accepted wisdom of present day society or meet arbitrary standards, so that each child can become an independent learner and thinker.
BFS is a true democratic school for children of all ages. Each child and staff member will have an equal voice in major decisions (and minor ones) affecting the day-to-day running of the school.
BFS believes that all children are natural learners and they are fully supported to pursue any interest they have, in the manner they choose, at their own pace, and for as long as they want to, as long as they do not restrict any other person's right to do the same.
Equally a part of our foundation as a school is the premium we place on maintaining an ethnically and socio-economically diverse community. Parents from all different backgrounds and economic circumstances apply to our school as there are no other alternatives in Brooklyn where children can be themselves and contribute to a democratic process of learning. This all depends on the support of our community and charitable organizations, which so far has allowed BFS to thrive with 80% of all students receiving financial assistance. We need your continued support to keep this model alive — to keep our school serving the needs of our socio-economically and ethnically diverse student body.
One of our most consistent supporters, the O.P. and W.E. Edwards Foundation, has offered us a challenge: a $10,000 matching grant, if we can raise at least $10,000 through our fundraising efforts. We are asking you to help us achieve this goal.
This is truly an exciting time in education, as the country debates the merits of various models of education reform. Brooklyn Free School is at the forefront of meaningful change in education for the 21st century and beyond. Please give generously to this amazing community and help us meet the Edwards matching grant challenge!
Thank you for your support.
