Every child deserves a great future. Yet, America’s kids are in crisis. Consider these alarming facts: the U.S. ranks 22nd in high school completion among 28 countries; three out of 10 kids are obese or overweight; and one in five youth lives in poverty.
There is an often overlooked, yet essential, component to transforming kids’ lives: out-of-school time. Every day, 15 million kids nationwide (one out of four) leave school with no place to go, putting them at risk of being unsupervised, unguided and unsafe. During the summer, an alarming 43 million (three out of four) American kids lack access to summer learning programs, increasing their risk of learning loss and putting them at a disadvantage before the school year starts.
As our kids prepare to go back to school every fall, the Boys & Girls Club of Troy wants to ensure that out-of-school time is part of the conversation. What happens during these hours can significantly impact a child’s path. For example, nearly one-third of all violent crime committed by juvenile offenders occurs during after-school hours. By providing access to positive and productive after-school and summer programs, we can help reverse the most negative trends facing our youth.
It takes the knowledge, skills and behaviors kids learn both in school and out of school to put our young people on the right path. The staff, volunteers and community leaders from the Boys & Girls Club of Troy have recognized this throughout the Club’s four decades of existence. We’ve seen the impact we can make.
Through the support of donors and community partners, we want to reach more kids in need and grow participation in our life-changing, outcome-driven, out-of-school time programs to transform the future for our kids, community and country.
Together, we can make great futures happen.
