The mission of Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California is to offer sanctuary, healing and forever families to distressed, abandoned, injured or homeless hounds.
Why Basset Hounds?
The shelters are over crowded and animals are not given very much time to be adopted before being euthanized. By rescuing a specific breed, the Basset Hound, our organization creates space in the local shelters for mixed breed dogs (otherwise known as "mutts") and gives these dogs a better chance of being adopted or rescued by creating a longer window of opportunity. In the shelter world, space = time.
It all began in August, 1997 when Sabrina Nichols, Adriene Sherard and William James (who since passed away), got together and pooled their resources to rescue their first hound, Cleopatra from the Long Beach Animal Shelter. As is true with most government funded shelters, Long Beach has a limited capacity to hold animals for any significant period of time before they are forced to euthanize them if they are not adopted. Fortunately for Cleopatra, three compassionate people cared enough to ensure that she would have the opportunity to live out her life in a loving forever home. Within 6 months after Cleopatra‘s rescue, several more hound lovers had gotten on board. With a growing dedicated team Basset Hound Rescue SoCal was eventually able to gain 501(c)3 non-profit status and we have been successful in their mission to rescue needy hounds ever since. In 2013, BHRSC took in 121 basset hounds and placed 126 hounds in their forever homes. 1,562 hounds have been placed since our inception in 1997.
Basset Hound Rescue Southern California is an all-volunteer organization. No funds are spent on salaries and no one receives a stipend. However, rescuing hounds in need and finding new homes for them is costly. All hounds that come to BHRSC are given a health exam, spayed or neutered, micro chipped and brought up to date on all immunizations. In addition, many of the hounds that come in have a need for dental and/or medical care including costly surgeries to have a quality life. We cannot provide these procedures without the generous donations we receive from our supporters. Your assistance is greatly needed and appreciated. There is no such thing as a small donation because every penny counts!
Since Jan 1 we have spent $75,000 on boarding and vet bills ALONE! Southern California, the hounds need your support.
Please join BHRSC at the 2015 Asics LA Marathon by registering for our team or donating to one of our existing marathon runners. Your donation is tax-deductible and our organization keeps 100% of the money raised. Together, and through your support, we can Save Them All! Let A Hound Rescue You!
