THE STORY:

Transitioning from a child to an adult is challenging in today's hyper-technical and global society. The community created in high school and the path to wholeness offered by art is absolutely essential to that successful transition. Buena High School, in San Buenaventura, California has been hit hard this year with tragedy in our community and now has an opportunity to create an uplifting work of art to bring us all together. Making a mural out of the music building's wall will show the public and our community that the transition from child to adult can be made successfully, triumphantly, through growth in the arts. We are hoping you will join us in showing that you, "can't hide that Bulldog pride" by contributing to the mural we will add to our campus this spring. The Buena High School music department became a highly influential part of my life when I joined the string orchestra in ninth grade. Playing in the string orchestra, watching marching band shows, performing at concerts and running fundraising events for the department has made me realize that music will always be a part of me, a way to express myself without words, and an experience to be proud of. It will always be in my heart because of the camaraderie, skills and values I have learned through making music with this wonderful family. This group has taught me the most important lesson of my life: always put your best effort, professionalism, and talent into your areas of passion. Playing music has made me into a hardworking, respectful, and understanding individual; these traits are ones I highly value and that I believe are essential to creating success in life. That being said, through this mural I hope to give back to the department that has taught me so much and also inspire future generations of Buena students to become part of this amazing music family. I believe it will improve the overall first impression of the school and even the city of Ventura itself. Most Importantly, I hope this mural will stand as a testament to all of the hard work and dedication that all of the music students at Buena put into this program each and every day. This mural was designed by a student in the music program, Zoe Colegrove, who recently passed away in October of 2015. The mural has been approved by the VUSD district board. The project is to be completed in late May of 2016. The attached picture illustrates the proposed design for the project including a quote by Victor Hugo that reads, "Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent."(quote shown in picture is slightly incorrect). The mural will be painted by various students at Buena High School under the supervision of local mural artist Petrina Sharp. All funds exceeding that which is necessary to paint the mural will be donated directly to the Buena High School music department. (note: picture of mural shown is photoshopped, the pending mural has not been painted yet) If you have any additional questions, feel free to email Kate at bhsmusicmural@gmail.com
