THE STORY:

Dear Friends and Family,

I am thrilled to announce that on April 17th, 2017, I will be running the Boston Marathon in support of the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC).  It is an honor to have been granted the opportunity to run, but an even greater privilege to raise donations for such a worthy cause.

As many of you know, I lost my father to cancer in May of 2014. Here is a little story of why running the Boston Marathon in support of the fight against cancer is an opportunity very close to my heart.

In April of 2014, shortly after moving to Boston, I was able to watch the marathon for the first time from a great spot at Mile 22, right next to the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. It was really an amazing experience. I was moved by the race itself, and equally by the endless displays of support and camaraderie between runners and throughout the Boston community.

Following the race, I called my father, Jim, whom I always called at the end of almost every day. My father was always my best friend and someone I always looked to for support and advice. When discussing with him how great watching the marathon was, he immediately asked,

“Why didn’t you run it?”

I laughed and told him that there was no way I would qualify. Although at the time I was running regularly, I understood the level of competition and doubted my ability to qualify based on time. I said it would be impossible.

“It’s improbable, not impossible,” he profoundly responded.

Mostly to appease him, I mentioned that I would investigate the charity programs associated with the race.

Just a month after this conversation, on May 26th, 2014, my father passed away from stage IV lung cancer. He was originally diagnosed with lung cancer during my senior year of high school in 2007, and as tough a guy as he was, he beat it. Unfortunately, it came back with a vengeance in December 2013, and his health began to deteriorate rapidly in the weeks following the race. Discussing the day of the marathon with him on the telephone was one of the last, long conversations we were able to have.  As an only child, and at only 25 years old, his passing was the hardest experience I have ever had to endure. Making him proud was and still is the main force motivating me to succeed.

He passed late one night, and the next morning having hardly slept and unsure of what to do, I decided to go for a run. Countless memories of our relationship shot through my head during that run. In hindsight, I probably could've run a marathon that day with zero training. For me, running has always been a great way to think, and decompress. Following that run, I decided that I would do everything in my power to try to run the Boston Marathon for him. Ever since his passing, during all of my runs, be it a short 3 miles on Monday, or a long 12 miles on a Sunday, I think about my Dad, and how proud he would be to see me run the race. I want to show him that I can do what he wanted me to do, to do the improbable, and to make him proud.

----

Although the experience of my father passing obviously took a huge emotional toll on me, I'm well aware that it would have been much worse if it was not for the sincerity, warmth and dedication of the countless oncologists, physician assistants, nurses and hospice staff that worked with him. While my father wasn't treated at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), I know firsthand that the BIDMC medical team is full of people (shout out to 12 Reisman) that make situations like dealing with cancer and the like much easier for patients and their families.

I realize my experience with cancer is not unique. Unfortunately, almost everyone is affected by cancer in some way. By contributing to the BIDMC team, we can get one step closer to reducing stories like mine and achieving a world that is cancer free.

In honor of my father and everyone and anyone who has been and is currently affected by cancer, I hope that you will help support the BIDMC team and help me reach my $10,000 (now $15000!) fundraising goal.

Thank you for your support and donation. Please click the link below to donate.

Warmest regards,

Anthony Lamendola
