Thank you: One week to go!
April 10, 2017
Dearest Family and Friends,
I am honored to run my first Boston Marathon this April to raise funds for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Each year, approximately one in eight babies in the United States is born prematurely, which has a profound impact on newborns and their families. These vulnerable babies often present with complex medical needs, ranging from severe breathing trouble to underdeveloped organs, and require specialized care to give them a healthy start. The Klarman Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at BIDMC provides state-of-the-art, family-centered care for about 1,000 high-risk newborns and their families each year.
While pregnant with my twins, Lauren and Brayden, I was admitted to Beth Israel Labor and Delivery at 24 weeks into my pregnancy. I remained hospitalized on bedrest for seven weeks until Lauren and Brayden’s arrival at 31 weeks. Weighing only 3.5lbs and 3.12lbs, they were tiny, but they looked "just perfect," despite the wires and tubes. For eight weeks, I traveled in to spend the day with them in the NICU, through their first Christmas and New Year’s. It was a long, challenging, and emotional journey—but we had the support, expertise, and guidance from the best medical professionals: nurses, doctors, physical therapists, social workers and support staff in the Beth Israel NICU. Each week, the nurses made me photo cards and journals capturing my twins' growth and development, detailing their precious moments and NICU milestones. I made it through those grueling weeks leaving my babies each night knowing they were cared for by the most loving and dedicated nurses and doctors.
When the twins were 4 months olds, I returned to work as a cardiac nurse on Farr 3. After a back injury necessitating surgery, (at the Beth Israel, of course), my recovery motivated me to return to running, where I have always found peace and strength.
On April 17, 2017, my 36th Birthday, I will run the Boston Marathon in honor of the Beth Israel, the place that has shared my birth, my family, my career, and provided us all with fantastic patient care!
Please consider donating to the Beth Israel NICU to help me reach my Goal!! I am so grateful for your support from Hopkinton to Boston.
A heartfelt thank you!
