Big Apple Greeter is the world’s first free welcome visitor program. We match visitors from across the country and around the world with friendly New Yorkers for free, informal, unscripted walks through the neighborhoods we love.
Over 350 volunteers work to make the New York City we live in, work in, and raise families in, manageable and accessible. We take people beyond the lights of Broadway and the wonders of Wall Street to show them the lesser-known sights, great little shops and local restaurants that give each neighborhood its special color and flavor. (We even show them how to navigate the transit system so they can venture off the beaten track on their own).
And, in the process of creating interstate and cross-cultural friendships and demonstrating our hometown pride, we highlight New York City’s rich and remarkable cultural and ethnic diversity. Over the past 25 years, we have greeted over 150,000 visitors from every state in the U.S. and over 100 other countries. And still, we can only match a third of those who want a greeter with our volunteers. Your support will help us engage more volunteers and introduce more visitors to “real New Yorkers".
Big Apple Greeter opens the heart of New York City to the world.
