THE STORY:

Did you know that just $80 could change a child's life? Every school day, the United States school system feeds millions of children who are in need their breakfast and lunch. However, there is a gap of meals over the weekend that these in-need students do not receive in their own homes due to financial hardships and circumstances. This leads to children going back to school with empty stomachs and no energy to learn and take part in their education. Poorer grades, lower attendance rates, malnourishment and increases of bad behavior in students are the result. This is where Big Blue Backpacks comes in. As an initiative started by students and their faculty advisor, Professor Mary Garrison, Big Blue Backpacks has partnered with the Good Samaritan Inn to help feed Dennis Lab School children in need over weekends during the school year. By providing students with the nutrition and wellness that they need to sustain a healthy life, Big Blue Backpacks will improve the lives of the students served. But, like every good cause, support from the community is critical for this program to see its full potential. Big Blue Backpacks is looking to raise $10,000 to fund the program for it's first year, and while we have raised some, we still need to keep going! For just $80, you can sponsor a single child for an entire academic school year with backpacks of food and other wellness items (shampoo, deodorant, laundry detergent, etc.) and make a difference in that child's life. While any sort of donations are appreciated, Big Blue Backpacks offers subscription to sponsorship tiers to show just how much people can make a big difference in their community: Desk: $80 feeds 1 child for an entire school year Lunch Table: $800 feeds 10 children for an entire school year Classroom: $2,000 feeds 25 children for an entire school year School Bus: $4,000 feeds 50 children for an entire school year Any donation is greatly appreciated, and any support (sharing this page, telling your friends and family, or volunteering for backpack assembly) is always welcome! Please visit our Facebook page for more information, program updates and ways to donate. Thank you for your support of this valuable program!
