EVENT DATE: Apr 01, 2014
I am traveling through Laos this year and I would love to give back to the community while I am there. I am planning on doing drop-in English conversation volunteering with a nonprofit called Big Brother Mouse. They are a wonderful organization dedicated to improving literacy and reading programs in Laos. I would love to give more to their organization! I am hoping to sponsor a book party through Big Brother Mouse that will provide a school in rural Laos with access to 250 books. The book party encourages Lao children to read and gives them the chance to have books in their classrooms. The books are all written in Lao and are age appropriate for the classrooms. During the book party, 4-6 members of the program staff visit a school where they discuss reading, play games, sing songs about readings, hold an art contest, have story time, and finally help the children select their first book!
Additionally, the program sets up a 'sustained silent reading' program in each of the classrooms and provides enough reading material for the program to continue. I remember sustained silent reading (or Drop Everything and Read as it was called in my school) as one of my favorite times of the school day and I would love to provide that opportunity to Lao children.
Any donations would be appreciated for this project and your support would be incredible. Even if you can't donate, please share with your friends to inform them of this opportunity to provide reading material to rural Lao schools.
