Big Brothers Big Sisters is a donor and volunteer supported organization proven to help vulnerable children of single, low-income and/or incarcerated parents succeed. We create professionally supported one-to-one relationships between children facing adversity and trained and supervised volunteer role models. Funding provides for targeted recruiting, screening, training and matching, as well as ongoing support, safety training and supervision for volunteers, children and families. Donations allow us to ensure child safety and sustain successful, long-term relationships with positive outcomes. Every dollar we raise goes directly to serving youth in San Luis Obispo County.
Since opening for service in 1995, we have created over 2,150 mentor relationships. In 2016, we served 392 mentor pairs in San Luis Obispo County. We have been recognized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America four times for outstanding performance and growth, putting us in the top 2% of agencies nationwide, and we were awarded with the 2015 Agency of the Year of the Small Mid Agency Alliance. The honor of both Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year for the State of California was awarded to local volunteers in 2014.
