Community Water Solutions (CWS) is a not-for-profit organization that works to bring clean water to rural villages in Northern Ghana through the implementation of sustainable water treatment businesses.
I have entitled my fundraiser 'Safe Water: One Village at a Time' because CWS has been able to make a huge amount of progress towards solving the water crisis in Northern Ghana by focusing their resources at the community level. Since 2008, CWS has implemented water businesses in 35 communities, providing safe water to over 22,000 people.
In October, I will be travelling to Ghana to participate in the CWS Fall Fellowship Program. I, along with three other fellows, will be helping implement a water treatment business in a rural village. During our time in the village we will a) build a treatment centre using all locally purchased materials, b) train individuals from the community to run the water business and c) monitor the quality of the water being sold.
CWS's innovative model stresses sustainability and empowerment. The treatment centres that are set up in these communities are centrally located and use low-cost, local technologies. The businesses are for-profit and operated by members of the community, thus empowering individuals to take ownership of their own water quality.
Funds raised will cover all of the capital equipment needed to build the treatment centre as well as other program costs. For the sake of alliteration, I chose the URL 'BigBucksBetterWater.' However, you don't really need to donate BIG bucks in order to make a difference. Every penny helps!
