EVENT: 2014 TCS New York City Marathon

Christina Minicucci

On November 2, 2014, I will run the New York Marathon in celebration of Joey Middlemiss and his family. Although, I didn't have the pleasure of spending time with Joey, our family and our community has been touched by him in immeasurable ways. For years, his mother Kate gave selflessly to every Kindergarten student that had the privilege of calling her their teacher. Each day she came through the door with a smile, ready to teach. She treated each student with kindness, attending to their needs and loving them as her own. She took the time to make a call to parents after hours and calm their anxieties and assure them that their child was doing great and would be ok.

And each day, Kate would say goodbye to her school family and head home to care for her own son, Joey. Joey was born with cardiomyopathy, a congenital heart defect. Joey was a miracle child who was a fighter who lived each day to the fullest.

On September 23, 2013 Joey left this world too early, but he left this world a better place. Joey wasn't an ordinary 6 year old. He was a 6 year old with a big heart and an appreciation for life that all of us can only hope to achieve. His optimism, despite all odds, infected those near to him and those who only had the chance to read his story or watch one of his famous music vidoes. Joey leaves behind his loving parents Kate and Scott and his baby brother Jack, who was born August, 2013 with the same heart defect.

I am dedicating this run to Joey, Jack, their parents Kate and Scott, and all the other children with cardiomyopathy who fight the good fight every day. Kate gave everything of herself to help my son when he needed it most and this fundraiser is my way of giving back to a family -- who is selfless with their time and with their love -- in their time of need. The Middlemiss Family has created the All You Need is Love foundation to spread Joey's mission of LOVE through random acts of kindness. The simple act of paying it forward in Joey's name has helped them find light in a dark time and remind us all that there is a lot of good in the world.

Please join me in helping this wonderful family carry on the mission of their beautiful angel. All you need is love!!
