BENEFITING: Bike & Build, Inc.
EVENT DATE: May 03, 2015
Support the Bike & Build Scholarship program by signing up to run the 2015 Pittsburgh Marathon! Our goal is for 10 runners to each raise $500; that $5,000 will be enough to fund a full scholarship. How? Check it out.
Bike & Build unlocks the potential of young adults to do incredible things. Each summer, we engage young adults in service-based, cross-country cycling trips to raise money and awareness for the affordable housing cause. After dipping their tires in the Atlantic Ocean, our riders pedal west, stopping every 4th or 5th day to build homes with local housing affiliates that support low-income Americans. Before reaching the Pacific, they spread awareness about a crisis that impacts tens of millions of Americans. Since 2003, our riders have donated over $5.1 million to our affordable housing partners, including Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, YouthBuild, and other local nonprofits.
The Bike & Build Scholarship goes a step further. It engages young adults who have lived the affordable housing crisis first-hand. Riders from at-risk backgrounds are empowered to develop skills in advocacy, teamwork, and leadership. Bike & Build opens new doors to these young adults!
The 2015 Scholarship program supports three riders from underserved backgrounds. Of note is the Patrick Zuza Scholarship, given to a rider that represents the characteristics Patrick exuded: an adventurous spirit with a deep commitment to service and the affordable housing cause.
