EVENT DATE: Oct 22, 2016
Houston's weather makes biking a year round activity. We have great trails along the bayous, but bikeways along city streets leave a lot to be desired. BikeHouston is at the forefront of changing all of that. They have worked closely with the city to develop the Houston Bike Plan. This plan seeks to add 1000 miles of bike ways all over the city over the next decade. All funds raised through the BikeHouston Moonlight Ramble will go towards funding our efforts in advocacy, education, and enforcement.
Advocacy: BikeHouston works directly with the city to ensure bicycles are considered as a viable means of transportation. This work has led to the creation of the Houston Bike Plan, Houston’s first plan in 20 years that prioritizes street and trail connections for people on bikes.
Education: Education of all road users improves street safety. BikeHouston works with the City and Houston Police Department to ensure that people on bikes and in cars know the correct rules of the road.
Enforcement: The law is meant to protect us. However, laws are no good if they aren’t being enforced. BikeHouston works to make sure that the laws that keep people safe are being enforced by local authorities. This includes the Three Foot Safe Passing Ordinance that makes it illegal for a car to pass a bike by closer than three feet as well as improving metrics to ensure that the most deadly traffic violations are reduced.
