My name is Maggi Gao, and I founded Noughts & Hearts (501c3 application pending approval) in 2011 to promote environmental awareness and raise awareness of the inequality of educational opportunities accross China.
Noughts & Hearts currently supports the education of 12 students (age range from primary school to college) in the Hulunbeier region of Inner Mongolia.
This year, in June 2015, we are planning a bike ride in the Hulunbeier region from the main city, Hailaer, to the town of Moerdaoga (in the district of Eluncun), where most of the children Noughts & Hearts support are located. The total distance the Noughts & Hearts team will bike will be around 500 km, and the route will cover grasslands, wetlands, mountains and forests.
The Noughts & Hearts team consists of college students from New York City and Shanghai, who all share a passion for giving back and charitable pursuits, as well as adventure.
With this bike ride, we hope to raise money to bring all our kids from Inner Mongolia to Shanghai for a summer camp that we call “Shanghai Dream.” This camp will happen the first week of August.
Our fundraising goal is $5,000 USD, which will cover:
- Train fare and Air fare: 29,635 RMB = ~ 4,765 USD
- Travel Insurance: 1,120 RMB = ~ 180 USD
The projected goal accounts for 12 children and 2 accompanying adults.
So why Inner Mongolia? The government of Hulunbeier has made extensive efforts to protect and preserve China’s largest natural grasslands and forests – some of those efforts include the banning of mining and logging, which are the main source of income for most local families. As a result, many of those families are struggling to send their children to school. We strive to help these children go to school, because like their parents we believe education is extremely important, and an opportunity that should be available to everyone.
In 2013, through my work on Noughts & Hearts, I was awarded the International Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for contribution to the local communities of Shanghai and Inner Mongolia.
Any additional funds raised will be put towards the yearly tuition of our children.
One year’s tuition for one student: 2000 RMB = ~ $330 USD
We hope you can help us reach our goal!
