Bucket List: Item 1 – Swim the Straits of Mackinaw!
I am Bill Erickson, a 61 year old Science teacher at Heritage High School in Saginaw Township. My sons now live in the Upper Peninsula, and I have driven over the Straits hundreds of times. Ever since I got interested in open-water racing in 1999 I have longed to swim them. I am delighted to be a part of this year’s team! My involvement in swimming began in high school, and I returned to the sport as a form of exercise later in life. My family moved to Dakar, Senegal (West Africa) in 1998. My wife (Becky) and I had accepted postings to teach the children of missionaries at Dakar Academy. When I found out there was a yearly open-water race to Gorée Island, I was determined to swim it. My first time was the next year; loved it! I swam the Dakar – Gorée (3.2 miles) a total of seven times while we lived in Dakar. We returned to life in the U.S. in 2008, and I have swum in other races here. My training routine alternates my pool workouts with cycling and rowing. My preference is still open-water swimming, and I train in the Great Lakes whenever possible.
I would be honored to have your support for the Mighty Mac Swim of 2016!
