THE STORY:

Hello, My name is Bill Hoenk.

I am creating this campaign as a way to raise additional funds to be donated to the Patriots Day Charity Campaign. The Patriots Day Charity Campaign is a nonprofit initiative that will empower people across the country to honor the city of Boston and the first responders, medical professionals and survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

I am a freelance photographer based in Nantucket MA. I lived in Boston in 2013 and I was near the finish line of the Boston Marathon when the explosions happened. I was about 50 feet away from the second bomb when it exploded in front of the Forum restaurant, and I ended up taking photographs of the aftermath. One of the photos I captured made the cover of Time, and several were used as key evidence in the prosecutions case against the terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

I was also invited to work as a background actor on the Boylston Street set, during the recreation of the explosions for the Patriots Day movie being released nationwide this week . I was playing a finish line volunteer and first responder after the first bomb was detonated. One of the scenes in the movie is a direct recreation of my Time cover photo, and they also licensed two of my photos from the event, which were prominently displayed at the end of the movie.

I've dealt with a lot of emotions from what happened that day. Even though I know that I did nothing wrong by documenting the immediate aftermath of the second explosion, I still feel, at times, overwhelming guilt for capturing such painful and personal images during those moments of tragedy, regardless of how important they ended up being. I've always wanted to be able to give back in some way, and I knew that eventually I would be able to. I feel the time is no more relevant than now, considering my story, and the nationwide release of the Patriots Day movie.

I would like to be able to offer, as a thank you to donors who contribute $50 or more to this campaign, a signed 12x18 print from my collection of Boston or Nantucket landscape photography.

Any donations I receive between now and Patriots Day (April 17th 2017) will be donated to the Patriots Day Charity Campaign, and through them, proceeds collected will be equally divided between 25 different causes* relevant to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

If you are interested, I wrote about my experiences from the day of the explosions and the week that followed in a blog post that was picked up and published by PetaPixel, a leading blog covering the world of photography. You can read that here:

I was also interviewed by CBS News Correspondent Don Dahler for a story that aired in two segments on CBS This Morning and the CBS Evening News, about my experiences and the contribution of my photos during the trial. You can see the CBS Evening News's segment at the top of this page, and if you'd like to see the version aired on CBS This Morning, you can view it through the link below:

I also had another blog post published by PetaPixel, about my experiences last spring working as a background actor next to Peter Berg, Mark Wahlberg and John Goodman on the Boylston Street set of the Patriots Day film. You can read about that here:

With the release of the movie, I will be getting some local press, and it is my hope that I can use those platforms to bring more attention to this cause.

Whether you are able to donate $5, $50 or $500, any amount helps!

Thank you so much for your time and donations!
