BENEFITING: Leake and Watts Services, Inc.
The Leake & Watts Biondi School is a year-round program for youth with significant academic deficits due to emotional and behavioral challenges, learning and developmental disabilities, and other challenges. The arts play an important role in developing well-rounded community members and have significant therapeutic value for our students with mental health diagnoses. That is why we prioritize arts programs such as our Music Program and our Steel Drum Ensemble.
The Biondi Music Program provides opportunities for students to participate in different musical ensembles, including our Choir and our Steel Drum Program, helping them to develop a better understanding of rhythm, melody, and harmony that leads to a lifelong appreciation of a wide range of musical styles. As they regularly participate in rehearsals and perform for various audiences, our Music Program students are continually challenged to build new skills and develop their ability to work together as a team. Performing in both formal and informal concerts also gives them confidence in their abilities, furthering their growth as young men and women.
The students involved in our Steel Drum Ensemble enjoy the opportunity to learn about music while working with our five sets of steel pans. Our steel drum players have gained the ability to play beautiful melodies and harmonies on the drums. They have also grown in character, showing true dedication and commitment to the group. Our teachers have been excited to see how the opportunity to participate in a musical ensemble has helped many of our students blossom!
But in order to keep the program running smoothly, we need YOUR help. As steel drums are fairly expensive to maintain, we need help to offset the cost of tuning and caring for the drums, facilitating rehearsals and concerts, and providing other supplies needed for our students to have an excellent experience in the music program. For example, imagine a steel drum program that could not afford to keep their drums tuned– it’s hard for our audience to enjoy the beautiful chords that the students are playing when the drums are out of tune!
Please consider helping us keep this program funded – our students and teachers would appreciate anything you can contribute.
