THE STORY:

Everyone thinks that the UK’s woodlands are wild places that thrive without human influence. Sadly, this is far from the truth.

In fact, in England alone almost half of our woodlands are unmanaged or under-managed. This has a huge negative impact on forestry jobs, how we enjoy them for walks, activities and the flowers and creatures that live there.

For example in recent years some butterfly species have declined by over seventy per cent and one in six ancient woodland flowering plants are now threatened with extinction.

But there is an answer - Good Woods! A ground breaking project developed to help turn this situation around.

Bioregional, working with the Sylva Foundation, has already started to breathe new life into the UK woodlands through the Good Woods project. We have worked with woodland owners and local communities to help woodland owners assess the productive potential of their woodland. We’ve advised major retailers to understand how they can source more timber from UK woodlands

But there’s a lot of woodlands that still need our help such as coppicing, thinning and planting to help them thrive.

We want to grow our programme of support to neglected woodlands and realise the value and importance of these vulnerable areas.

Our project is seeking funding for a range of activities that will help to realise our vision for sustainable managed woodlands in the UK.

Your support will help (for example):

  • Community groups to care for and improve their local woodland
  • School children to better understand the value of nature
  • Woodland owners to look after their woodlands in a more sustainable way.

Community Groups

£40 will pay for a place at a community woodland workshop
£100 will provide equipment for volunteering days
£200 will pay for a community woodland workshop

Schools

£10 will pay for a school child to attend a woodland workshop
£70 will pay for 10m of edible hedgerow planting
£500 will pay for a picnic area made from local, sustainable timber

Woodland owners

£75 half a day on site training to woodland owner
£150 for a full day mapping, visioning
£1000 will pay for professional support and improvements to 5ha of undermanaged woodland

Our vision

Our vision is to create woods that are good for people and for nature; where links between communities and woodlands are strengthened and markets for UK woodland products are improved. The aim is to support flourishing woodlands for the 21st century and beyond
