THE STORY:

Somaly Mam Foundation wrote -

Somaly doesn't know her real name, or the day she was born. She chose April 2 as her birthday, and each year we use this date to celebrate her brave life and groundbreaking activism, and to highlight the work yet to be done. Her vision—a world where women and children are safe from slavery—can only be achieved with the help of the next generation. Here are 3 ways to help fulfill Somaly's birthday wish:

  1. Give a "birthday gift" and donate to support prevention and advocacy in Southeast Asia.
  2. Join the Crowdrise team and help raise funds.
  3. Sign Somaly's digital birthday card.

Why fund prevention and advocacy?
We believe in a multifaceted approach to combating human trafficking and modern slavery. Together, we must use many channels and approaches—top down, bottom up—to build a critical mass of anti-trafficking activists and enact real, sustainable change. For this campaign, we are fundraising in two phases: If we reach GOAL #1, we can unlock GOAL #2.

Goal #1: $11,000 - Prevention and Eradication through Advocacy and Mass Media
Right now, our Voices For Change activists lead groundbreaking efforts in grassroots, bottom-up change, educating the regional community in a regular radio program. The “Somaly’s Family” hour educates Cambodian listeners on how to recognize, address, and prevent trafficking, with a representative from Voices For Change to lend a survivor’s perspective and field questions from listeners.

Now in its third year, the show has educated tens of thousands of listeners on human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and children, and how to address, prevent, and regulate it. The show reaches a broad audience of students, teachers, parents, police, military police, karaoke bar owners, restaurant owners, job recruitment agencies, law enforcement officials, and other authorities. Guests include lawyers and legal experts, shelter service providers, and Voices For Change members. Help them continue to run the radio show through 2013.

IF we MEET the $11,000 goal, we will UNLOCK another level of support!

Help us reach this goal and make Somaly's birthday count. Be a part of this critical prevention and advocacy work and help us to lay the groundwork for real, sustainable change. Together, we can build a world free from slavery.
