Tammy Hsueh's Fundraiser:

Birthdays for Tigers

Tammy's Photo

BENEFITING: World Wildlife Fund

THE STORY:

For my Birthday, I hope to bring awareness to the ever stunning, yet ever endangered Panthera tigris (Tiger). I wished for a while that I could make an impact. But by myself there is little I can do. And so! I am making this birthday wish. I hope all of you can chip in to help >_<

Not-Fun-Facts:

Three out of the nine subspecies of Panthera tigris are already completely extinct (The Bali, Javan, and Caspian Tigers), with the South Chinese Tiger extinct in the wild. As little as 3,200 remaining in the wild. Approximations are: 500 Malayan, 300 Sumatran, 450 Siberian, 350 Indochinese, and less than 2,000 Bengal Tigers.

PLEASE HELP!

The most crucial threats to Tigers now are illegal poaching, exotic animal trafficking, and habitat destructions. Help me help WWF save them before it's too late!

I want nothing more for my birthday, just this. Since it's my 25th, a $25 donation would be nice. However, any amount will be acknolwedged and appreciated!

If you have a thing for these Big Cats as well, then join this Team and fund raise for them for your birthday too! All are invited!

My affinity for Tigers...

starts with being born in the year of the Tiger. What turned my infatuation to passion goes back to Febrauary 2010, in Thailand. One of the most vivid memories in my life was my interaction with a full grown female Tiger at the Phuket Zoo.

The zoo I visited allowed picture ops with a full-grown, adult Tiger. I noticed two disturbing things during this experience; this Tiger had a bump on top of its head (look to picture on the left), and appeared sedated. Meanwhile, a man with one arm uses a blunt wooden stick to both threaten and actually hit this Tiger on top of her head to make her roar for the picture. At one point, he whacks this creature so hard on the top of the head, she snapped and roared. Immediately, I begin to remove myself from the platform where I laid with the Tiger as quickly as possible... don't want to get mauled thanks to the idiot that fired her up! The man responds angrier and attempts to strike her again! Without much thought, I blocked the blow with my arm, and tried to tell him to stop as he tries to get to the Tiger. Finally, he relents.

When I turned to look back at the Tiger, she calmed down and almost seemed to have understood what I did on her behalf. She kept eye contact with me as she laid down, and began acting cub-like. Who knew, that a powerful creature like herself could display gratitude. Just look at the photos! It was such a touching moment, I was compelled to hug her! I would have LOVED to! But I did not. At the end of the day, she's still a full-grown Tiger, and I do not have that kind of insane courage.. not yet! She'd be the reason that I go back to Thailand.

Sometimes I think back to that moment, and wonder what it would feel like, to have hugged her. This cherished memory comes with a bit of anxiety. I feel the need to save her ; it breaks my heart to not be able to fathom a way to do it. She is great. And yet she must succumb to the end of a blunt, wooden stick. As I took a step to leave, she covered an eye. These moments felt too coincidental, so much, they are vibrant in my memory. It saddens me to know that she'll return to her life as I witnessed it, as soon as it was the next tourists' turn.

Why WWF?

WWF contributes international efforts in the protection and preservation of Tigers. There is so much to be done; this organization has both the experience and ability to act fast and act now.

Please consider this cause, and help me raise $2,500! However much or little will do! Once lost, the absence of Tigers in the wild will be irrevocable.

Waiting for their comeback,

Tams
