“I’ll Stay Because They Need Warmth”
On January 27th, I’m heading for the deep freeze. But it’s for a good cause. I hope I will have your support.
It happens too often. In the midst of our often frequent tough Southwestern Pennsylvania winters, there are some of our neighbors who suffer. For one reason—or a million reasons.
While the reasons are important, we need to focus on the hard fact that they can’t maintain their utilities. And they can’t afford to get them restored. It’s cold in their homes. It’s dark in their homes. These are families that need our help.
More than 30 years ago, the Dollar Energy Fund was founded to help out these families, our neighbors. Since then, the Dollar Energy Fund has grown to become the largest hardship fund in Pennsylvania and one of the largest in the country.
Soliciting contributions is never easy. But for the Dollar Energy Fund it’s a good time. And I’m honored to be taking part this year as I have done for past several years. I’ve volunteered to participate in the “Cool Down for Warmth” event this January.
Here’s how it works. On January 27th and 28th, a house of ice will be constructed at PPG Place in Downtown Pittsburgh, near our diocesan Pastoral Center. I’m going to be sitting in that “Cool Down for Warmth” ice house until I have raised $2,500 in pledges and donations for the Dollar Energy Fund.
I’ll stay because they need warmth! There’s no place too cold to spread warmth.
This is a wonderful cause that helps people without regard to race or creed, gender or economic condition. It just helps people stay warm and keep the lights on and the water running.
You can call in a pledge in my name the day of the event or drop off a donation while I’m in the “Cool Down for Warmth” ice house at PPG Plaza cooling my heels. I’ll also be contacting people from the ice house that day by phone, e-mail, social media, carrier pigeon or shout out—whatever it takes.
But I’m also asking your help here and now so that maybe these old bones of mine won’t have to shake for too long in that ice house. I am recruiting as many donations as I can at this website.
Please make a pledge now. If I can meet that goal through your kindness and generosity, 14 families will stay warm this winter—the perfect reason for me to cool down.
Thank you and God bless!
