THE STORY:

On January 28th from 2:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m., I’m heading for the deep freeze so that others can stay warm. I hope I will have your support. In the midst of our frequently tough Southwestern Pennsylvania winters, some of our neighbors suffer from bitter cold. It can be for one reason or a million reasons. While those reasons are important, the bottom line is that that these families can’t afford their utilities. They may choose food for their children over heat. Once the heat or water is shut off, they can’t afford to get it restored. It’s cold in their homes. It’s dark in their homes. Some are elderly. Some have young children. All of them need our help. More than 30 years ago, the Dollar Energy Fund was founded to help these families, our neighbors. Since then, the Dollar Energy Fund has grown to become the largest hardship fund in Pennsylvania and one of the largest in the country. Soliciting contributions is never easy. But the Dollar Energy Fund has fun doing it. And I’m honored to take part again this year by volunteering for the “Cool Down for Warmth” event. Here’s how it works. On January 28th and 29th, a house of ice will be constructed at Market Square in Downtown Pittsburgh, near our diocesan Pastoral Center. I’m going to sit in that “Cool Down for Warmth” ice house until I have raised $2,500 in donations for the Dollar Energy Fund. I’ll stay because they need warmth! This is a wonderful cause that helps people without regard to race, creed or gender. Everyone should have light, heat and running water. You can call in a pledge in my name on the day of the event or drop off a donation while I’m cooling my heels in the “Cool Down for Warmth” ice house at Market Square. While I’m in the ice house I’ll contact people by phone, e-mail, social media, carrier pigeon or shout out—whatever it takes. But I’m asking your help here and now so that maybe these old bones of mine won’t have to shake for too long in that ice house. I am recruiting as many donations as I can at this website. Please make a pledge now. If I can meet that goal through your kindness and generosity, 14 families will stay warm this winter—the perfect reason for me to cool down. Thank you and God bless! Bishop David A. Zubik
