WE REACHED THE GOAL!
August 05, 2016
It was my original intent in running this marathon to enhance my own strength, to help myself value myself, and to feel my own humanity.
But last week, the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile (the latest examples - among hundreds - of people of color who have died at the hands of police brutality) reminded me that we are not currently giving equal value to - or recognizing the humanity of - the lives of black people, queer people, and/or those with disabilities.
It is now my intention to use the marathon as a way to raise my voice in solidarity and to help raise money for a cause which urgently needs our support - Black Lives Matter.
Here's is a little bit of language from #BlackLivesMatter describing what most moves me about their cause. "Black Lives Matter affirms the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, black-undocumented folks, folks with records, women and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. When we say Black Lives Matter, we are broadening the conversation around state violence to include all of the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. We are talking about the ways in which Black lives are deprived of our basic human rights and dignity."
I hope that you will support me in this endeavor to support this imperative movement working to make America a place that is safe for all.
