This fall, Blackburn Center is participating in the Purple Purse Challenge! This innovative fundraising opportunity, sponsored by Allstate Insurance, will help us raise funds to continue our mission of providing services to victims of domestic violence and working to end violence in our community.
We are asking you to join us by donating to help us reach our goal of $5,000 -- and to win prizes along the way that will help to support our work.
All of the services that we provide to victims of domestic violence and their loved ones are both free and confidential. Our clients' stories are not ours to share. However, we are able to share a story that has been formed from many of our clients' stories, to give you an idea of the importance of what we do.
"Jane Doe" resided in our emergency shelter for 5 weeks. This shelter is available to victims of intimate partner violence and their loved ones. Jane and her 3 young children fled an abusive relationship in another county to seek safety with us in Westmoreland County. While our shelter provide them with safety and met their basic needs, our additional services helped Jane to get back on her feet and start a new life. She worked with our staff to learn how to budget money. For the first time in her life, she believed she could manage her finances on her own. Jane was able to get part-time employment with the assistance of our staff, and began to make contributions to her savings account -- the first one that she had ever had.
When Jane and her family moved into a home of their own, she was able to work more hours. She committed to deposit a larger portion of her income in her savings. She also decided to return to school to advance her skills. With support from her employer, she was able to continue working while attending class. She was able to purchase a newer vehicle to help her travel safely to school and work. Jane provides for her family financially and believes that she has become a good role model for her children. She is now confident and proud of her accomplishments, including completing school in spring 2017. Jane continues to update us with her progress and successful new life.
"Jane Doe" is just one example of a client who has been able to leave an abusive relationship and thrive in a new life with the support and assistance of Blackburn Center. The services that we provide, including an emergency shelter, a 24 hour hotline, therapy and counseling, legal system support and medical accompaniment, can be the key for victims of domestic abuse starting a new life, free from violence.
We ask you to donate today to help us continue the important work that we do in Westmoreland County in providing services to both victims and the community.
