Black Lives of UU
Organized by: Black Lives Unitarian Universalism
Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism is an organizing collective of Black UU's working to expand our role and visibility as Black people without our UU faith. Formed after initial conversation at the 2015 Movement for Black Lives Convening, the collective seeks to continue to build it's voice & impact in Unitarian Universalism through multiple 2016 initiatives.
A tenant of our work is to ensure that Black people are paid a fair wage for their labor and that the work done is compensated as a reasonable rate.
Initiative #1: UU General Assembly 2016 - Black Lives of UU Track
The Black Lives of UU track is a four-part workshop series emerging from the recently established online network of black Unitarian Universalists through the Facebook group Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism, and the companion FB group of black UUs, other UUs of color and their white allies.
The track is intended to inform, empower and inspire black Unitarian Universalists, other Unitarian Universalists of color and their white allies. Some programming will be provided in explicitly black spaces, with complementary programming for other people of color and white allies. This is distinct from the way programming has been offered in years past, and is related to the freedom of expression experienced by several of the Black UUs attending the Movement for Black Lives Convening in Cleveland last summer.
• Session 1: The Movement for Black Lives Convening: Unitarian Universalists in Action
• Session 2: Black Lives in Unitarian Universalist History: A Primer
• Session 3: Antiblackness: An Introduction
• Session 4: Black Lives and Unitarian Universalism: Our Ongoing Work
Initiative #2: Black UU Monthly Online Healing Space
Black UU's have made clear the need for continual healing together as Black people. The Black Lives UU collective seeks to create a monthly online space for Black UU's to congregate, gather & heal together.
Initiative #3: Black UU Regional Gatherings
We will plan and organize regional gatherings for Black UU's to come together, heal, learn and organize with each other in person.
