THE STORY:

Thank you for visiting our page and helping to make sure ALL #BlackLivesMatter across this globe. In September, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis organizers, Kandace Montgomery and Michael McDowell, will join a delegation of Minnesota and Wisconsin activists, organizers, and politicians, in working collaboratively with Afro-Colombian workers demanding justice in the port city of Buenaventura as well as sugar cane and flower workers. As the wealthy benefit from structurally racist policies and abuse of power, Afro-Colombians are fighting for their lives and land. We will join these workers to learn more about how they are combating the after affects of terrible trade policies and work in allyship with them to ensure their lives matter more than the profits of the corporations that export their country's resources. Please read a letter directly from port workers about the conditions they face in Colombia as well as their support of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. "Buenaventura, a city whose residents are 90% Afro-Colombian, is Colombia’s most important port, exporting over 60% of the country’s goods. In spite of the wealth that passes through our communtiy, we suffer from an unemployment rate four times higher than the national average, and 80% of our city’s residents live in poverty. While we support the ongoing talks being held in Cuba in order to end our country’s 50 year armed conflict, the only development that we have seen locally are emerging gangs that recruit our children and use increasingly brutal ways to murder our neighbors such as the casas de pique (chop houses). So today we take a stand as a community to say that ‘black lives matter."
