Our Mission

Blackshear Bridge is committed to building a diverse and sustainable community in central east Austin.

Help us sustain and build our community food hub for health and wellness in central east Austin.

Inch by Inch: Putting the Garden in Kindergarten program staff take kindergarten students outside to grow, harvest, and share their own food. Beside growing veggies, fruit, and herbs, the children plant flowering wildlife habitats and observe the insects they attract in our big, connected web of life.

Blackshear Elementary Fine Arts Academy is a Title I public school with significant poverty and health challenges.  Our programs introduce healthy foods to eat.  The cafeteria manager has served produce from the school garden in the school cafeteria.  She reports seeing an increase in the amount of vegetables the children are eating over all.

Last year we piloted a new Bread & Roses Community Farm to Market Stand during the PTA’s First Friday Snack Sale to make healthy, organic produce affordable and accessible under the big oaks by the school's playground where parents pick up their children.

We want to sustain these programs and build on them.  We are poised in a new partnership with the Housing Authority to develop and deliver classes for a new Bread & Roses Garden Club at a community garden we’re helping to create at nearby Rosewood Courts where many of the school’s children live.

We are also ready to fund two, paid Umoja college interns from one of the nation's leading historically black colleges/universities across the street from Blackshear -- Huston-Tillotson University the home of Green is the New Black.

We need your help to establish our growing healthy food hub in central east Austin and to keep our neighborhood diverse and sustainable.

You can contribute through Crowdrise to Blackshear Bridge. Our Summer Moons Campaign goal from July 1 - September 1, 2015 is $20,000 -- about an eighth of our annual budget.  If you want to push it over the top, we appreciate that as we would like to raise our entire budget soon so we can put our mind to preparing curriculum and materials for the fall programs!

From the center of our hearts ~ Thank you for your generosity and collaboration!

Donna, Kevin, Gina, Amanda, Kiki, Alice, Justin, Fax, Jason, and Melinda

PS  We'd like to meet you and express our thanks with a veggie, herb, or flower gift during a tour of the garden.  We'd also like to send you seasonal newsletters and event invitations -- overall about 6 emails a year.
