THE STORY:

On May 1, 2016, I, Blaise Mariner, will be running the Colorado marathon in Fort Collins, Colorado. I will be running not only for my mom, but for brain tumor surgery research. Technology surrounding this has come a long way, and I would like to see it go further. So I ask you to donate. Donate for a loved one in a similar situation to my mom, or donate because you have enjoyed Jean's company at one time or another. The donation will go to the American Brain Tumor Association for the advancement of understanding a treating brain tumors. My training plan consists of running a combined total of 822 miles starting on January 1, 2016 and a hefty goal of beating the time of 3 hrs and 5 minutes, the qualifying time for the Boston marathon. And the following story is my "why" and the story of my mom's tumors. As a freshmen in high school, she was a top varsity athlete on her swimming team. She went on to swim at Oberlin College. Throughout her career as a swimmer, and throughout her early life, she was plagued with headaches and poor balance. She occasionally fell off the blocks at the starting line of her swimming races. On 8/8/1988, at 26 years old as a new high school math teacher, she found a small tick embedded in her hip, and soon after was diagnosed with Lyme disease. This diagnosis ended up saving her life. Following the diagnosis came the first experience of nerve tinglings going down her leg. Lyme disease can bring the threat of meningitis. The doctor used a spinal tap to test for meningitis. The results tested negative for meningitis but contained an unusually high amount of protein. This is indicative of a brain tumor. An MRI revealed a plum-sized tumor called an Acoustic Neuroma. The surgery that was preformed on patients for something like this was risky. They removed a circular disc of her skull behind her ear, drained the fluid, and in one 13 hour surgery removed the Acoustic Neuroma and a previously undetected meningioma. Ever since that day, doctors have remained watchful over that area of Jean's brain, and it seemed as though she was in the clear. The surgery had caused weakening in the muscles of the left side of Jean's face, severe balance and coordination problems, and a completely deaf left ear. But normal life expectancy was revived and in about a year, she settled into a normal life in her classroom and with my dad. Now, nearly 30 years later, both tumors returned. The return of tumors and the surgery that would follow haunted my mom and was the material of nightmares. This time around, however, the type of surgery that she received was a gamma knife surgery, not available to her 30 years ago. This type of surgery is a radiation surgery that used gamma rays to decay the specific points where the tumors persisted. This is a type of "surgery" that leaves no scars and sparse side effects and allowed her to return to her classroom in 3 days.
