THE STORY:

We are a mother-daughter team, Angie Tenebrini and Charlotte Steckart. We recently went on a trip to Costa Rica where we participated in a homestay in a small town called Orosi. Three days out of the week that we was there, we did a service project at a Foster Care Home called Hogar De Ninos Baik. There were 20 children living there ages 2 months to 8 years old. It was run by some nuns. The government of Costa Rica places children there when their parents can not take care of them. They can be there for up to 8 years or more if they don’t go home or are not adopted. The facility is surrounded by a tall cement wall topped with barbed wire. In the home they have a kitchen and dining room, a room for the babies and the toddlers. There is an indoor playground with a trampoline and a small fenced in outdoor play area. They have a washing machine but no dryer. They have toilets and running water, but sometimes the water gets turned off. While we were there, we noticed that the limited amount of toys they had were broken. The children shared their clothing with one another. There were not a lot of toys or even comfort items such as stuffed animals or baby blankets. Because of the humid climate in Costa Rica, cotton doesn’t dry easily. Stuffed animals get moldy fast. Cotton can take days to dry. What we would like to do is to make fleece baby blankets for these children. We want each child who comes to the Foster Care to receive a fleece baby blanket, something that would be theirs to wrap up in, cuddle with, and feel comforted with. They would keep it during their Foster Care time and take it with them when they go home, or when they find a new family. We need your help. We are asking for donations so that we may purchase fleece material to make 40 3x3 baby blankets so that the current children and future children of Hogar De Ninos Baik will have these cozy fleece blankets to welcome and comfort them. The total we plan to raise is $500.00 at a cost of $10.00 per blanket. We plan to make these as simple as possible, by just sewing an edge around the blanket. If we can buy the material on sale, we will cut the cost in half, and we can use the remainder to purchase durable toys for the children as well as pay for the shipping to Costa Rica. Thank you for your time and attention, Angie and Charlotte
