BENEFITING: Susan G. Komen
EVENT DATE: Nov 16, 2014
In the Spring of 2008, I sat on my twin sized bed in my single dorm room in Memphis, TN and listened to my mother explain to me that my Aunt Maggie had been diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. Always the life of the party, Maggie exudes an infectious zest for all that life has to offer. She taught me and my sister at a young age to embrace our inner crazy and to never be afraid to live our lives outside of the parameters society defines for us.
Inspired by Maggie's battle to fight and, thankfully, defeat the terrible beast that is breast cancer, I made the active choice to defy my genetics and change my unhealthy lifestyle. Over the past year, I've joined Weight Watchers, lost a significant amount of weight, but more importantly, I have changed my perspective on life.
Despite five knee surgeries and a wicked case of early onset arthritis in my left knee, I have decided to run the Las Vegas Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon with my sister and brother-in-law by my side. There's no better way that I can think of to embrace my inner crazy than to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to fight for a cure and honor my sweet Maggie.
Cheers to you, Maggie, my motivation to love and be loved.
