Blythedale Children’s Hospital is one of only 19 specialty children’s hospitals in the United States (and the only one in New York State) that treats medically fragile children with complex and debilitating medical conditions, some of which are life-threatening. Our unique blend of acute pediatric medical expertise combined with extraordinary talent in therapies and rehabilitation medicine makes Blythedale a vital resource for children and their families seeking to overcome significant medical and physical challenges.
Infants, children, and adolescents are referred to Blythedale from the area’s leading pediatric medical centers, and come to Blythedale to complete medical treatment started in the ICU and commence an intensive course of rehabilitation. Blythedale treats the whole child, not just the particular disease, by creating specific care plans for each patient that reflect the input of a comprehensive interdisciplinary team, and we normalize a patient’s stay by providing educational services in our modern state-of-the-art 34,000 square feet school.
As a safety net hospital, we care for some of New York’s sickest and poorest children. 75% of our patients are on Medicaid and over 60% come from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in the five boroughs of New York City. Many of the children and families live well below the poverty line, and a substantial number of children have only one parent at home.
