At boards of opportunity we believe access to healthy fun outdoor activities and education is a right of youth globally. We are seeking to raise funds to purchase and transport surfboards and laptops to aid the Jamaican Surfing Association (JSA) (http://jamsurfas.webs.com/), who organize training and monthly organized competitions for youth in Jamaica. The JSA also sponsors a homework center for children in the community of Boston Bay. It is the hope of the JSA, that some of it's members will be successful at international competitions such as the ISA world games and have a chance as professional athletes.
Steph Lingard, founder of Boards of Opportunity, spent six months living in Jamaica in the winter of 2010 and 2011. During her stay, Steph was overwhelmed by the kindness and warmth of the surfing communities in both Bull Bay and Boston Bay Jamaica. As she came to know these two amazing communities, Steph realized how important the sports of surfing and skateboarding are to the welfare of youth in these areas and formed Boards of Opportunity (www.boardsofopportunity.org). Steph has seen first hand how involvement in the monthly organized competitions creates opportunities for strong lifelong friendships, as well as serving a healthy outlet for energies that could otherwise be directed in negative ways.
The projects first set of deliveries included donated gear from friends and family as well as Long Beach Surf Shop and Storm Surf Shop, Tofino, British Columbia. This time around we would like to raise funds to purchase high performance boards for the Jamaican kids to hone their competitive skills on.
It would be hard to express in works the gratidute and warm of smiles experienced from the first set of deliveries. Every donation, no matter how small, is truely changing a life by helping to make surf equipment available to these youth.
