Haunted by his experience as a medic in Vietnam, Bob Adams struggled with alcohol, drugs and homelessness before getting sober and eventually becoming a clinical social worker. When he realized that many veterans were fighting similar battles while living on the streets, he took action. In 2007, he co-founded the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, a nonprofit that now helps nearly 400 veterans a year with free services like housing, counseling, employment and household items.
