Bocoup's Fundraiser:

Bocoup & Science Club for Girls Laptop Challenge

THE STORY:

Bocoup is partnering with the Science Club for Girls to teach computer programming and literacy skills to middle and high school aged girls in the greater Boston area. Through this partnership, we have run an introduction to web development workshop, started an internship program for high school seniors, and will soon begin a game development class for the fall semester. These programs allow the girls to pursue self-directed exploration of programming skills and opportunities in a creative environment.

While our programming has generated much interest and enthusiasm from the students, they are limited by their lack of access to modern tools. In order to spend more time learning and less time troubleshooting outdated machines, we are raising funds to procure new laptops for all of the Science Club for Girls technology programs.

We will raise enough funds to purchase 60 laptops for the Science Club for Girls. The first 12 laptops will be used in Bocoup’s game development class (starting October 1st). The next 12 will allow us to expand the program to include a web application course in the spring. The next 24 laptops will be allocated to expand the web development curriculum to reach middle school students. The final 12 machines will be used to expand our program to another Boston high school.

Science Club for Girls has provided free science and engineering programming to K-12 girls in the greater Boston area since 1994. Their mission is to increase the self-confidence and literacy in STEM of K-12th grade girls belonging to groups that are underrepresented in these fields, through programs that include hands-on learning, mentoring, and leadership opportunities. scienceclubforgirls.org

In honor of Beth O'Sullivan. How do I pick a "team field"?--there's nothing in the fund-raising message about Girl Geek Dinners or what they have to do with Bocoup. Not even sure what "Bocoup" refers to either: I certainly don't want to contribute to the corporation! I wanted to contribute to Science Club for Girls. Since the fund-raising letter mentions "partnering with" Bocoup, I picked it on the guess that donated laptops and apps is what "Bocoup" stands for in this context. Hope I'm right! 3 years ago
