Halfway there!
March 11, 2016

Hi All, We are half way to our goal!  Please help us to keep moving forward until we reach our goal. Thank you all so much!!!  See more

THE STORY:

Every year the Fire Museum of Maryland starts the summer season with it's Steam Day Show outside of the Museum.  This year during our annual inspection prior to the show, we learned that it is necessary to re-build our 1899 Steam Engine Boiler because it's walls have become too thin and it can no longer be safely operated.

Here are some facts about the boiler:

  • The boiler holds the water that is heated by coal to create steam; the steam is what drives the engine and pump so that the water could be pumped to the upper floors of buildings.
  • The engine that we operate regularly was built in 1899 by the American Fire Engine Co., Seneca Falls, N.Y., and was purchased by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst F.D., Long Island. It won the State championship for longest-distance stream in 1915. Later in 1916 the fire company had the boiler replaced; the entire unit was replaced by a gasoline driven machine the following year.
  • The Fire Museum of Maryland restored it to working condition in 1986 and has been operating it ever since.
  • The new boiler will be a different design and will conform to modern boiler standards, e.g., no lapped seams or rivets.

Donors will be gratefully acknowledged and also recognized on a plaque.
All gifts are tax-deductible according to the laws of the State of Maryland.
Pictures and information about the FMM may be found at our Web site: www.firemuseummd.org

Help us to continue to preserve this important working engine that we use to educate adults and children alike about early fire fighting techniques and apparatus as well as the role they played in the evolution of modern fire fighting.
