THE STORY:

William Wosilius wrote -

Our cover photo says it all.  This is the singing of the 3rd verse of the Air Force song in front of the cadet wing after every football game.  It is a tribute to our brothers who have passed away, and slipped the surly bonds of earth.  2016 was a tough year for the Air Force football family.  Despite a fantastic 9-3 season by the Falcons and an impending bowl game, the "Bolt Brotherhood" lost two of its all-time greats.

On August 29th, the Academy's greatest quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist, Dee Dowis (Class of 1990) was killed in a car accident in Gwinnett County, Georgia.  Dee left behind his wife Tracie, his kids Maddie and Grant, and a legion of loyal friends and teammates.

On Thanksgiving weekend, after the Falcons pulled off an amazing upset of #19 Boise State, we lost All-American defensive back, Carson Bird (Class of 2008) to a long and inspiring battle with a rare form of bone cancer.  Carson left behind his new bride Brittany and an army of friends, family, and teammates who loved him.

At the Navy game this year, my teammate Cliff Lovelace (aka "Caddy") and I shared our woes from football injuries.  We groaned about not being able to stay as fit as we would like, and made a commitment to run a mud obstacle course adventure race as soon as our surgeries allowed us to get back into fighting shape.  Caddy's back surgery and my neck surgery were successful, and I signed him up for the race.

Then I got the news about Carson, and this idea was born.  The goal for this will be to bring as many former Falcons back to Denver on August 12th for the Rugged Maniac 5K adventure race to honor our fallen brothers, and to donate any and all proceeds we raise to the Lone Survivor Foundation.  I'd like to make this an annual event, but first things first.

Thank you for considering a donation to our cause.  We're doing it anyhow, but it would be awesome to be able to pay it forward to the war fighters and their families who fight to protect our way of life.

"Here's a toast, to the host, of those who love the vastness of the sky,

To a friend, we send, the message of his brother men who fly,

We drink to those, who gave their all of old,

Then down we roar, to score the rainbow's pot of gold,

Here's a toast, to the host, of the men we boast, the US Air Force"
