BENEFITING: Back on My Feet
ORGANIZER: Back on My Feet
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
To all my Friends and Family -
Raise your hand if you've ever passed a homeless person on your morning run. I do, every morning. Here's why that's meaningful....
As many of you know, I have been diligently training for the NYC marathon again. A race that is near and dear to my heart. This time I am running for a worthy and incredible organization, Back on Your Feet. Back on Your Feet is revolutionizing the way our society approaches homelessness, one city at a time. This organization uses a unique running-based model that restores confidence, strength, and self-esteem in homeless indivuduals. This, in turn, leads to jobs, homes, and new lives.
Indivuduals who are experiencing homelessness around the country begin by committing to run 3 days a week in the early morning. After 30 days in the program, members with 90% attendance can move to the second phase of the program called Next Steps. Next Steps provides educational support, job training programs, employment referrals and housing resources. An astounding 80% of indivuduals who start the program move into Next Steps. Please visit the Back on your Feet website to learn more about the amazing impact and success rate they have experienced so far, including some emotional and raw testimonials: www.backonmyfeet.org. Or, if you want a quick overview of how this program is helping, visit: http://www.backonmyfeet.org/news/ss-goodnet
Nobody is exempt from experiencing homelessness, yet there is a stigma attached to this word. 11 major cities in the United States currently have a Back on Your Feet chapter. My goal for this race is to raise awareness about this organization, reduce the stigma associated with homelessness, and perhaps even inspire new chapters to ensue. For anyone who is inclined to financially support my cause and help me to reach my goal, I will bedazzle myself with your name on my shirt, arms, and legs on race day. I will take you all with me on my journey November 6th (unless you specify otherwise) and am planning to post pictures along the way.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about this cause, and for the incredible support many of you have already shown during my training this summer.
My deepest gratitude,
