BENEFITING: Back on My Feet
ORGANIZER: Back on My Feet
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Friends and family, many of you have been following my running journey and as you know, it is something that I have grown to love tremendously. A year ago I never thought I'd be running, and today I am super excited to announce that on November 6, 2016 I will be running the TCS NYC Marathon! It's exciting because not only is this on my bucket list, but also I will be running on behalf of Back on My Feet. They are an amazing charity that give the homeless a second chance at life through running.
"Back on My Feet recruits members at homeless and residential facilities around the country and begins with a commitment to run three days a week in the early morning. After 30 days in the program, members with 90% attendance earn the opportunity to move into the second phase of the program called Next Steps, which provides educational support, job training programs, employment partnership referrals and housing resources. Over 80% of individuals who start our program move into the Next Steps phase."
A little over a year ago, I was very unhappy with how I looked and felt. On that fateful day in March '15, I ran for the first time and hated it. That being said, I felt as though I had finally found my way out of this rut and by the end of that day was signing up for my first race. God knew what he was doing when he put Latoya Lewis in my life because if it weren't for her encouraging me to start running, I'd probably still be in that rut today. It is true I have lost a lot of weight since starting. What's more important, however, is that running has changed the way I think about myself and the world around me. It has shown me a strength that I never knew existed and I have gained a great deal of self-confidence which could not have been made possible without the incredible support of my running community. I see that I am no longer an individual, but a part of a much greater whole. Additionally, running has granted me the opportunity to travel the world and meet so many fellow runners with inspiring journeys of their own.
For the TCS NYC Marathon I have pledged to fundraise $3,000 for Back on My Feet and with your help, we can make a world of a difference for these individuals who so desperately need it. Not only will you grant me the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream(that I thought was never going to happen), but also you will help give your fellow man a fresh start.
