BENEFITING: Back on My Feet
ORGANIZER: Back on My Feet
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
“Let him who would move the world first move himself.” - Socrates
Back on My Feet is a lot of things. It is an organization that contributes $2.50 back into the local community for every dollar donated through increased economic activity and cost savings. It helps employ 476 members annually and finds housing for another 294. (And since I know all my fact checkers are out there: http://dc.backonmyfeet.org/nationalimpact).
But it goes beyond that for many of our members and many of our volunteers, including myself. As the classic cliche goes, "Back on My Feet is much more than a running group, it is my family." (I know you've heard that one somewhere - it is pretty famous). I've heard this uttered by friends, other volunteers, and members as we share a Thanksgiving potluck meal, cross a finish line together, or gather for a morning circle. We've seen each other through jobs, rain, moves, highs, lows, and the Blizzard of 2016. These are the people I look forward to seeing at 5:45 am. They are the ones who will hug me when I'm sweaty in the hot, humid summer months and huddle next to me for warmth in the dark, cold winter mornings. We've celebrated 5ks, half marathons, and full marathons. Our feet have pounded the same pavement as our lives converged in space and time. Other volunteers have become roommates and teammates have become close friends. This is more than a running group - these people are my family. So yes, look at the numbers, because those are important. But also, ask around, come to a morning circle, check out this whole "family" thing for yourself, and help make an impact on both others' lives and on your own. You won't regret it.
If you've ever wanted make $2.50 for a dollar, please donate here! I'm running to support these people that have supported me. Consider donating and watching your contribution more than double in our local communities. And when you're done doing that, come join us!
#26milesfor26years (this will be my first marathon the day before I turn 26 so feel free to send good vibes my way as well!)
