BENEFITING: Be The Match
EVENT DATE: May 14, 2011
For those of you who don't know my sister Cathy, she embodies the spirit of humanity. Throughout her life she has reached out to others in need and done whatever she can to help them. Whether it be working as a volunteer with Jesuit Volunteer Corps or giving her a time to a local charity she is forever selfless.
Cathy was married just last year to her best friend, Carlos PiSierra. They reside in Boston, MA. When she is not working, Cathy loves to travel and spend time with her stepchildren, Nate and Zoe.
Cathy, was recently diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).CLL causes a slow increase in the number of white blood cells called B cells in the bone marrow. The cancerous cells spread from the blood marrow to the blood. CLL eventually causes the bone marrow to fail and weakens the immune system. In acute cases bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant can be done and has shown promise.
While this type of cancer is generally diagnosed in patients in their 60s, Cathy was diagnosed in October at the age of 38. As she is in the early stages now we have decided to take proactive measures and conduct a bone marrow donor drive to look for a match. Even if a match for Cathy is not found this drive could help someone else. Testing for a match is done with a simple swab of the cheek - NO BLOOD IS DRAWN. The date for our drive is 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2011 in Manasquan, NJ - at the Manasquan First Aid Building located at 65 Broad Street, Manasquan, NJ 08736.
There are no fees or charges to conduct the drive or join the registry, the non-profit organization that runs the drives, Be the Match Foundation, incurs costs to recruit, test and enroll new members. The cost to place an individual on the registry is about $100.00. By donating you can help defray the costs of the drive!
