Book Club NMCMS
Organized by: Jennifer Clayton-Bouder
I started a lunch-time book club last year at North Monterey County Middle School in Castroville, California. Since eighty percent of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, most of the students cannot afford to purchase books for pleasure reading and many cannot make there way to the public library. Our budding bibliophiles deserve a chance to read and discuss books that are relevant to their lives. These students treasure the written word and are very appreciative of the books that I give. I allow the students to choose the books from a list of young adult literature that I have read. This year, my goal is to be able to read two books per quarter with the club, which means that I will need a total of 160 books for the year. Paperbacks run from about eight to twelve dollars a piece, so my goal is to raise $1600 for the books, and if there is leftover money, I would like to buy the students lunch during our meetings.
