Books on the Run
Organized by: Martin
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
- Margaret Mead
Our classroom is made up of 25 scholars attending Frost Lake Elementary in Saint Paul, Minnesota (U.S.). The students have challenged themselves to read 100 books and run 100 miles as a classroom before the New York City Marathon takes place (November 2nd, 2014). Students will be given an opportunity to participate in a kids 5k race to show off their skills. To top it off, their teacher (me) will be running the New York City Marathon. Proceeds from this fundraiser provide new books and pay for digital applications that support struggling readers and enhance literacy skills for all.
What's the Point?
Independent reading is a powerful tool in building academic achievement. This project is driven to motivate our students to read but also be physically active. A significant ammount of research has shown that maintaining an active lifestyle and the potential for academic achievement can go hand-in-hand. Oh yeah! Both reading and running promote perserverance, personal responsibilty, and independence.
We'll be updating our progress with our adventures in running and reading. Check back frequently for personal stories, pictures, videos, and more!
