BENEFITING: Books for Africa, Inc.
As such, I find it tragic that so many people in the world have never experienced the joy that can be found in the written word. Worse, there are many who are unable to read the most basic of documents that are essential to everyday living – can you imagine not being able to read a road sign, or a menu at a restaurant, or complete necessary medical or school documents without assistance? This is a problem that affects millions of people worldwide, in both third-world and developed countries.
Did you know …
• 21 African nations have literacy levels of below 50% and that, overall, 4 out of 10 Africans are illiterate (two-thirds of them women)?
• In developed countries such as the US, Canada & Australia approximately 60% of prison inmates are illiterate and an even higher number cannot read above a 4th grade level?
Books For Africa is an organisation which collects and distributes books in needy communities in African Nations. My target goal of $9800 is the amount required to send an entire sea container of books and computers to these places. For more information on the great work these people do, head on over to their website at http://www.booksforafrica.org/
As an incentive for you to support this project, I have set up a blog at http://crowdrise.jaimesthorpe.com/ which you are welcome to visit :) For every donation made(no matter how small), I will write a book review of whatever I happen to have read recently. Hopefully you’ll find this of interest, and you might find something new to read yourself (I have *very* eclectic tastes ;).
As a bonus, every person who makes a donation of $10 or more can CHOOSE a book for me to read and review (hopefully something I can find easily at the local library LOL)! It can be anything – any author, any genre, I’ll give it a go – I’m sure I’ll get some pretty interesting suggestions! When you donate, simply leave me a message with your book suggestion.
