boost for BOOST

For those of you that know our family, you know that the mental health of our military plays a significant role in our lives. Dan spends his day as a psychologist treating our active duty with PTSD. What he, and many other professionals have noticed, is that the ffects of PTSDs go far beyond the active duty member. Family memebers are being affected as well, and the side effects of what is becoming known as Secondary PTSD are very detrimental, especially to children.
According to a RAND study, there are 2.3 million American veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and at least 20% of those veterans now have PTSD or depression (http://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/monographs/2008/RAND_MG720.pdf. Many of these veterans have families and caregivers who struggle with the effects of Secondary PTSD. Secondary PTSD has been found to impact psychosocial development which can cause anger, depression, a drop in grades, self destruction or destruction of property, acting out, withdrawal from family and friends, and many other symptoms similar to those of PTSD. Many parents are unaware of Secondary PTSD and that there IS a way to help!
While there are many services available to assist the veteran with coping with PTSD, Boost’s mission is geared toward the military child, offering a multi-tiered approach to overcoming secondary trauma.
Boost will assist the military child in overcoming secondary trauma by achieving the following objectives.
1. Educate veterans with PTSD how to recognize the signs in symptoms of secondary trauma in their children.
2. Offer patient advocacy services by locating a qualified therapist in the area who offers Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy or Behavioral Family Therapy .
3. Provide financial assistance to cover the cost of co-pays or full charge for 8 family therapy sessions per child.
4. Provide an online community for children to connect with others in the same situation.
We need help to get this off the ground. We need to file as a 501c-3 , create marketing materials, and get our name out there in order to obtain the large grants that will allow us to provide much needed services to our military children.
Thank you so much for your interest and donations!
