This summer, an opportunity has arrived for me to be a part of the world class Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle corps. Throughout the summer, many world class corps tour the country competing for the highest levels of musical achievement. This activity is called Drum Corps International (DCI) Young musicians from around the world go through a competitive audition process beginning in the fall of the previous year to be part of their corps of choice. Advancing students are then called back to subsequent audition camps to continue competing for a spot, which may not be finalized until March or April. When each member has been chosen, the corps continue to hold weekend camps once a month to rehearse and prepare for the summer. Once summer hits, each corps has a few weeks of intense all-day rehearsals and exercise before they get on the road for tour, preparing and mastering a 10 to 12-minute show. Each corps has their own show that they perfect throughout the entire summer, rehearsing all day and performing throughout the country, until the final competition in Indianapolis on August 11th. DCI has an age limit of 21, unless the performer turns 22 on or after June 1st. Many corps members begin as early as 16 years old, marching every summer until their “age-out” year. This summer is my second to last summer to march, as I will turn 22 in September of 2013.
I have been offered a spot in the Boston Crusaders snare drum section of the drumline. Drum corps is a very unique and influential activity in the field of music performance and education. As a Music Education major at the University of North Texas, this experience will not only further my abilities as a well-rounded performer, but is a major credential as a music educator. Drum corps is also a huge source of networking connections within my field of music and education. This activity will be a huge contribution to my resume, and will open the door to many job opportunities within the near and far future. I have loved the world of music since I committed to this career my sophomore year of high school. As it is a huge blessing to finally be offered such an amazing opportunity, this summer activity is also expensive. The base tuition for the Boston Crusaders is $2450, with each weekend camp at $75. The corps provides food and transportation for the entire summer, as well as each camp. This is quite a price for a college student, and can take a hefty toll on a family’s finances.
I would like to humbly ask for any donations that you may be able to offer. Any support will be a great help to raising the funds I need to make this summer happen. I've raised about half of this money so far, but summer is coming very quickly! Thank you for taking time to read this. I am very excited to take this opportunity God has placed in front of me. Most importantly, I ask for your prayers as I prepare for this next stage of my life.
