Big Class is expanding to build a youth writing center in New Orleans and they need our help! In order to make this dream a reality, we need to help raise $100,000 by the end of the year.
Working in education, you tend to meet some really great folks. However, when I first joined the Big Class community in 2013, I encountered a community of teachers and learners who were engaged in work that all too often doesn't happen enough during the school day: writing, discussing, creating, listening to, and sharing stories.
One of my favorite events that Big Class puts on each year is their Pizza Poetry Project, which gets the poetry of Big Class students on pizza boxes at a handful of the city's finest pizza joints as well as other places across the country. With each book and event that Big Class puts out through their expanding programming across the city, we're exposed to poetry and stories that entertain and educate but, perhaps most importantly, show how valuable the experience of providing a stage for youth to share their voice is in their education.
For me, Big Class is a constant reminder of how wonderful and how necessary it is to provide engaging and creative opportunities for all students. Just as important as it is for students to learn about the world around them, Big Class has provided countless opportunities for students to learn about their place in the world and the value of their voice and perspective.
To ensure that Big Class can continue to provide great programming to more students in the city and to develop a youth writing center, I'm asking you to make a donation to support this vision. I'm hoping that my team of supporters can help me raise $500 by the end of the year.
