Bosnia Doboj Flood Relief

I watched in awe as disasters struck Thailand, Haiti, Japan, and I gave my 10 bucks to George Clooney telethon. You always think bad things happen to other people, so I happily went to bed one day only to awaken to the worst disaster Europe has witnessed in 120 years, and it was in my home town, Doboj, Bosnia.

I was told a flood happened, and I though, "I'll send some Wellies over". Upon turning my trusted FB on, I quickly realized that they don't make boots 16 ft high! Do the math! That is an entire 8 ft ground floor, plus first story all under water. Livestock - dead, pets - dead, homes - dead, farms - dead, people - dead! Upon further research I found out that it wasn't just my town. It was town upon town, spanning 3 countries - Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia.

I live happily in California, but what I saw on FB and never on the news in the USA, unfortunately, is something you can't put into words. I am usually very passive, and again, as with everything else, you think someone else will deal with it, but this time it became obvious very quickly - with the lack of media coverage - that that Someone had to be all of us, as No one was coming.

What makes this a way more tragic story is that a war ravaged this region only 20 years ago, and even though everyone was entertained by the killings then and you couldn't turn the TV on without someone "freeing" and "liberating" people of Bosnia, today everyone went eerily silent.

The economy is non-existent, and it seems as though people just rebuilt their war-torn homes. The unemployment is at 44%, and virtually no one has property insurance, savings, or credit cards, so please don't compare it to the great floods of Surrey!

Pictures I saw were of people alive, but very much dead inside!

My cousin had just remodeled his modest first floor apartment with the last of the savings to make room for his first child due in a month, and he reported that everything went to "picku materinu" (google it). But he is young, he will persevere. There are others that are crying not because they lost everything, but because they don't have any more time to rebuild everything.

I am a real estate agent in Tahoe City, CA, you can find me at if for any reason you have any trust issues. 100% of the money will be handed to a trusted source in Doboj, Bosnia to personally distribute to the neediest: elderly, animal welfare organizations, and desperate. I am not collecting for Serbs, Muslims, or Croats, but for people and their furry friends. I will do personal research on who the money gets given to, and make sure that it crosses the divide.

Thanks for skipping out on a frappuccino today to donate!
