BENEFITING: One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
In 2013, my cousin, Emily Rechlicz (Scranton, PA), passed away as a victim of domestic abuse and suicide. A graduate student at Marywood University for Physicans Assistant, she was on her way towards graduating when her boyfriend of a few years brutually raped her. Being the courageous person she was, she stood trial to bring her abuser to justice but when he made bail, she felt trapped and threatened, eventually ending her own life.
After this tragedy, our family decided something good had to come out of a bad situation - we started Team Emily, a group of friends and family running various races in memory of her (and always wearing purple, the color of the bird tattooed on her).
After running several races and two previous marathons, I have decided to make my Boston Marathon debut to honor my cousin by raising money for the OneLove Foundation. OneLove was founded from UVA Lacrosse player, Yeardly Love's death and aims to raise awareness for the younger generator on how to detect abusive signs, how to deal with them, and how to overcome.
It would be an honor to fundraise for such a great cause, and something so near and dear to my heart. Had Emily been able to notice the signs of abuse before they happened, there might be a chance she'd still be here today.
To personally contirbute to my cause, I will be donating $1 for every minute I am running during the marathon! Don't know how much you should donate? Do $26.20!
Please consider donating to my cause; while most people just think of combating the actual issue, I'm hoping we can empower those around us to recognize the signs of domestic abuse so they can be stopped before another tragedy.
