EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Dear Friends & Family,
This coming April I will be doing something I never thought I would do in my lifetime: running a marathon -- and the 2014 Boston Marathon at that! I have been inspired to do this because of the tragic events of last year’s Boston Marathon. Experiencing the mayhem around the Finish Line is something I will never forget, from luckily meeting up with Katy’s dad amidst the chaos, to the time it took to find Katy out on the course and then heading back to the finish line to find her brother and sister who had recently finished the race before the bombs went off. I am so thankful that we all came out of the day safely.
Unfortunately as we all know, there were many others who were not as lucky, and we continue to pray for them and their families. The silver lining, though, is that in the aftermath of the marathon bombings, the city of Boston displayed incredible resolve and came together like never before; #BostonStrong was born. Stories of amazing acts of heroism and selflessness emerged, our city government and law enforcement sprang into action, people gave willingly to the One Fund which was set up to benefit those and families directly impacted; and the people of Boston quickly took back our city.
None of that would have been possible without great citizenship and leadership among Boston’s residents. That is why I am running the 2014 Boston Marathon to benefit the Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foundation whose mission is to provide students with the skills, opportunities and inspiration to affect positive change in their communities; and whose vision is a world in which young people embody citizenship through service and leadership in their communities.
State Senator Mike Rush said at the 2013 MassSTAR Citizenship Conference, “We need great citizens to be great leaders.” I have seen first-hand the ways in which MYL Foundation inspires citizenship and cultivates leadership in our students and I know that they will continue to spread these values and become the great citizens and leaders we need in the future.
I hope you will help support me in my goal to raise $2,620 in support of the MYL Foundation and its programs, specifically the 2014 MassSTAR Citizenship Conference, which is offered at no cost to more than 100 students from across Massachusetts. You can do so at the following link and any amount helps!
This year’s MassSTAR Citizenship Conference will be held on May 30-June 1 at Lasell College, so feel free to stop by and see us in action!
